South Burnett Disability and Mental Health Expo Shines A Light On Services

A special Expo which aimed to “fill in the gaps” in knowledge about what disability supports are available in the South Burnett was held at Kingaroy Showgrounds on Sunday morning.

The Disability and Mental Health Expo was organised by two local residents with a passion for helping people: Laurel Cohen and Tony Scrimshaw.

Tony was formerly with APM NDIS Kingaroy but has now set up his own business, Living Actively Disability Support Services, while Laurel is a parent of a child with a disability.

Laurel said she could see there was an information gap that needed to be filled just from her own experience.

“I didn’t know what services were available in the area, and the places I asked didn’t know everybody because there are a lot of independent services now,” she said.

Tony said the invitation to have a stall at the Expo was also extended to services from outside the region who could work with people in the South Burnett.

There were 25 stallholders booked in – ranging from the Rockin Our Abilities group from Murgon (who were providing live music) to the Sunshine Coast Spinners wheelchair basketball group and Wunderdogs who offer “animal assisted activities”.

Living Actively Disability Support Services

Living Actively Disability Support Services has come to the South Burnett to give participants Choice and Control.

Disability is the inability to see ability.

Living Actively does not see the disability but what the participant sees in themselves and by supporting them with their NDIS plan. Together we can go on their journey to assist participants with Independent Living and building upon their Social and community Participation. No one should be blocked by not being able to access their community and we believe by assisting participants we can build people lives and make them feel valued in their communities.

Living Actively was created with the passion and understanding from a family member who had Cerebral Palsy. There was no support back then only given by the love and care from family and friends. The NDIS has changed so many lives and will continue to do so with participants being able to have Choice and Controls to build their independence.  As a disability support organisation we care and have a passion for the participant wanting to reach their goals, their dreams and if able to have  meaningful employment.

Blackbutt combats COVID in Bazaar Fashion

Despite the festival blackout because of COVID19, Blackbutt Avocado Festival organisers have been working to ensure that the Blackbutt Community can continue to fundraise, help support our local businesses and provide a safe place for our locals and visitors to get outdoors. A new event – TOP OF THE BLACKBUTT RANGE BAZAAR – an outdoor boutique and local produce market that will take the place of the beloved Avocado Festival in Blackbutt for 2020, with the first one held along the Blackbutt Rail Trail head on Sunday 4th October 2020.

The town of Blackbutt, located just 150kms north-west of Brisbane, has been growing the Avocado festival for over 10 years and is known for producing Avocados (and Blackbutt Timber, Small crops, Persimmons, Honey and Macadamia Nuts to name a few).

There will still be the opportunity for patrons to taste Avocado based foods, as the Blackbutt Avocado Festival will be holding a food stall and still a space for some of the famous Avocado games.

NBN Co helps people to avoid scams at home and work

NBN Co is continuing its efforts to educate the community from scammers who are increasingly deceiving Australians with new and variations of common nbn themed scams emerging in recent months.

But it is not just people at home who are at risk.

In 2019, businesses reported 5904 scams to Scamwatch with losses of over $5.3 million with business email compromise (BEC) scams causing the largest losses of any scam type ($132 million).

BEC scams affect businesses, suppliers and individuals by tricking people into paying invoices to scammers’ bank accounts instead of the legitimate account.

In fact, Scamwatch reports from businesses show that false billing scams caused the highest losses, at $2.7 million (including some business email compromise reports).
